Kuhl Stuff-Contd.

Back in the old(hot) days (beforeAC) when we moved to "The Valley" we lived in houses built to catch the southeastern breezes which "came up" about 4 pm every day. The coolest houses faced east to catch that breeze.  Ours did!  That meant that double windows(screened) and  screened doors able to be opened wide, fans were at a premium, and baths were 1-2 per day! It also meant that few of the people fit the "overweight" problem of today's people. -- Too busy working and sweating  to allow the effects of the diet take hold,  or worry about the effects of the heat. !
Around Labor Day comes "White Wing Season" at which time the men (and rare women)ignore the heat and pursue the quest of shooting mourning doves and white wing doves.  It is a welcome break and fraught with new stories and encounters with the inveterate Cajun hunters of the swamps of  Louisiana. --And a few new stories of our own.
With"White Wing Season" comes cooler nights and cooler days. With the daily peaks reaching the high 80's , instead of the high 90s and the low 100s. -- Houses could be opened leaving the screens of the windows and doors at an earlier hour and freedom reigned!
One day in early October 1960-61 my good friend Dr S & I determined that our afternoons off coincided that day.   "Let's hunt doves!"  So to meet at our house at 2-or somewhat.
So I was topping off my "power nap" when Dr S knocked at the door gently(eager beaver). (He was the proud father of a pair of  relatively immobile chunky twins in contrast to our skinny kids).
Our 3 1/2 yr old answered the door without a word and climbed up the inside of the screen door to the wide-open mouth, aghast ,horrified face of friend Dr S.  Trembling with frustration and fear he was "struck dumb"  as our representative on the other side of the door climbed up and unhooked the door- and let him in as I appeared.
He wasn't a very good shot that day. Don't know why!
