Drive-Ins and Kids

"Drive-in theaters were a great thing for our large family.  We could get entertainment for the whole family for the price of parking the car.  Our family favorite popcorn was tucked away and consumed during the movies.  The first year after we arrived at "The Valley" we had 5 children and 2 adults, and "couldn't afford a pit to hiss in"as they used to say in Upstate New York , where Ruth and I grew up.  Strangely enough all doctors are not born with silver spoons in their mouths. --However Ruth and I were "depression kids" so the 'hardships" were not too bad for us.
When Corien was about 3 1/2  we went to a drive-in to see some fabulous movie.  The deal was that the older ones(all boys, it happened) were allowed to leave the car and be with a friend, or sit on one of the benches up by the refreshment center if they would behave.  The younger ones were to stay in the car except for toilet breaks.
After about three quarters of an hour there came an announcement over the speaker system:  " We have a little tow-headed girl who says her name is "Susie".  Come get her at the Refreshment stand, please."
"Tch, Tch some one's not looking after their little child." we thought.  After a few more minutes a second announcement came over the speaker.  --"What  shame!"   After a few more minutes came a third interruption.    " Oh,  Corien's been calling herself "Susie"  lately"-said one of the girls.   " Hmm, I'll check the Refreshment Stand, I  guess.", said yours truly. " Hmm! "  My next words were to a happy lass licking on an ice cream cone,:" Corien , come with me, if you're out of the car you should be with Paul or David, not alone! "   " Thank you very much for your time and patience, folks!"
Never happened again!  Lucky us!
"By the way , don't be too verbally critical of parents!  You might be talking to yourself!"
